Pen-Pal Time-Zone Helper
Choose your city and your pen pal’s, and see how many hours apart you are plus the shared window when you’re both awake — shown on each of your clocks.
Meeting in the middle of the day
Making friends across the world is one of the best parts of having a pen pal, and time zones are the one bit of maths that trips kids up. Seeing the hours apart, and the window when both of you are awake, makes it easy to plan a call after school or a weekend video chat — and to understand why a message sent at bedtime won’t get answered until morning their time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a pen pal need to think about time zones?
A letter doesn't care about the clock, but a video call or a same-day voice note does. If your friend is eight hours ahead, they're heading to bed as you get home from school. This helper shows the hours between two cities and the window when both children are awake, so calls and quick replies land at a friendly time for everyone.
How is the 'shared window' worked out?
We treat a child's awake-and-free time as roughly 8 in the morning to 9 at night in each city, then overlap the two. The result is shown in both your local time and your pen pal's local time, so you can each glance at your own clock and know when the other is likely free.
What if there's no shared window?
When two cities are very far apart, their waking hours barely meet, and the tool will say there's no good live window. That's completely fine for pen pals — it just means you'll trade letters and messages that the other reads the next day, which is the gentle rhythm snail mail was made for.
Does this account for daylight saving time?
It uses the standard UTC offset for each city, so during daylight-saving months a city may be an hour off from what's shown. Treat the result as a close guide, and if a call matters, double-check each other's current local time before you dial.
Uses each city’s standard UTC offset and a typical 8am–9pm awake window. During daylight-saving months a city may shift by an hour — confirm before a live call.
